The most popular and well known of East Java’s tourist attractions is undoubtedly Bromo Mountain. Standing at a height of 2392 meters, Mount Bromo isn’t the tallest mountain in Java but it’s spectacular sunrises, and majestic views across to Semeru volcano to the south makes this trip a “must”. Probably you have seen somewhere pictures of perfect sunrise on this pretty valley but recent (28th January 2011) eruption which covered surrounding villages with layer of black ash, still rainy, misty off tourist season brings you different type of pictures.

Near by there is a Hindu temple which was evacuated at that moment.

Even from far it you feel the air shaking.

Once a while it spits black smoke.

During the day usually it’s a mist around the village which makes it surreal.

Only at night you can see the flame shooting out of volcano.

Local collects firewood since with a black sky and no sun it gets chilly.

Nothing much else to do, just wait till volcano stops spitting ashes which by the way is perfect fertilizer for a soil.
